Introduction

Bali is considered by many to be their perfect Paradise Island, an isle that is deep and intriguing, lush and tropical. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean lap at beautiful beaches and palm trees sway in the breeze. Nearby the visitor may find the spectacular Mother Temple of Besakih, the ancient capital at Singaraja, and the floating palace of Ujung. Some of the best surfing beaches in the world can be found on the western side of the island whilst the eastern side is a wonderful haven for families, with beautiful white sand beaches and gentle seas.

Arts and Events

The Balinese people have preserved their own unique variety of Hindu faith and culture, even though Islam is now the dominant religion of Indonesia. Their beliefs are reflected in numerous ceremonies and festivals, and magnificent temples and palaces.

Ubud, until recently a quiet village, has grown into a cultural center for Bali's visitors, a beautifully set small town abounding with smart galleries, craft-making artisans and fine displays of traditional music and drama.

Denpasar is the island's modern capital, and its Bali Museum (Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali) can serve as a useful introduction to the Balinese way of life and art.
