Picture the vast fantasy world of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and then double it. That is the scale of Dubailand, just one of the city's major new entertainment resorts that are being built to draw 15 million visitors to Dubai by 2010.
Featuring six themed worlds, or cities within a city within a city, and occupying close to 200 square kilometres, this vast entertainment complex is symbolic of Dubai's rapid transition from desert outpost into the entertainment and business capital of the Middle East, offering visitors the time of their lives under sunny skies.
Dubai serves up its entertainment on a grand scale, where shopping is also firmly in the entertainment category. Retail spectacles such as the month-long Dubai Shopping Festival draw millions each year, and the city's stunning shopping precincts, golf complexes and entertainment resorts loom large in this dazzling city.
Dubai's superb all-year round climate makes it an ideal destination for adventure and outdoor fun. If you are after an action-packed vacation, you can have a desert adventure by jeep, camel or horseback, culminating in a moonlit Arabian desert barbecue; get beachside with watersports such as boating, fishing, diving or waterskiing, or tee off at any of the city's superlative golf courses, perhaps enjoying the thrill of floodlit thoroughbred and camel racing in the evening.
Dubai hosts the world's richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup, plus blue riband golf, tennis and sailing tournaments - so you can get to see many of the world's top sports stars in action. Thrill seekers can enjoy full throttle fun at the Dubailand Autodrome and awesome sand skiing on Dubai's dunes, or for something more sedate there is unique wetland birdwatching and the noble sport of falconry to be enjoyed in and around Dubai.
But if you are not coming to Dubai for an activity holiday, then there is plenty of nightlife and cultural entertainment to enjoy, from numerous native and international restaurants, bars, discos and live music concerts to English language cinemas, theatre and city tours. The Dubai Marina is the ideal place to unwind over a meal or drinks at an elegant waterside restaurant, or why not hop aboard a wooden-chow for a dinner cruise of the creek, passing Dubai's waterside attractions en route?
Dubai's nightlife is as diverse as the many cultures that call the city home, with an abundance of stylish and cosmopolitan venues to enjoy an evening's entertainment. Dubai's large expat community gather at friendly venues like the Irish Village, The Agency Wine Bar and the Champions Sports Bar, whilst Al Diwan, Club 21, Layalina, Zumorrod, Abaya and Al Meghanawati are among the popular Middle Eastern-style nightspots in Dubai. Here, traditional Arabian-style entertainment and cuisine is given a contemporary edge.
Deira and Umm Suqueim are famous for upscale Dubai hotels - many of them featuring popular night spots such as the Copacabana nightclub at the Four Points by Sheraton Bur Dubai, and Ginseng, at Wafi City. Popular Western-style nightspots include American Dream, Crystal Room, Rockafellas, Rumours, Scorpion and The Chameleon Club.
