Introduction
Founded as a military strong point, a castle placed on a steep crag, Edinburgh soon became the capital of Scotland, a position it has now regained with the devolution of powers from the Westminster parliament. Financial services, tourism and governmental administration are its economic mainstays.
The city spreads over a number of once-volcanic hills and valleys set near the east coast of the heavily populated central belt of Scotland. Rain is persistent, though its climate is milder than most other parts of the country and bright sun often lights its picturesque townscapes.
The castle above the city gives onto a long street, the Royal Mile, which passes through the medieval old town, whose close-knit streets and alleys are said to be haunted by many ghosts. Off to one side is the eighteenth century New Town, the rationally planned child of Edinburgh's intellectual golden age. Visitors variously commend the city as charming, romantic and mysterious.
