Introduction

Hot sunlight, sparkling sand, palm trees, skyscrapers and diverse sophistication are the keynotes of Miami, a century-old city on the south-eastern coast of Florida. Some call it the "Capital of the Americas", due to its large Cuban Hispanic population and housing of many companies' Latin American headquarters.

Miami Beach runs along a long island close to the city, and spreads over seventeen others in Biscayne Bay. Fashionable South Beach is noted for its "Roaring Twenties" architecture. Distinctive neighbourhoods, luxurious shops and fine dining places, many of them serving a New World Fusion style of cooking, attract and satisfy discerning visitors to one of the United States' most significant cities.

Arts and Events

Miami, amongst other things, is a party town, and the largest it holds is the Carnaval Miami in March, when a million people dance in the streets to celebrate Hispanic culture in Latin America. June finds local venues hosting the International Hispanic Theatre Festival.

Conventions and trade fairs are some of the city's big earners. Yachties may visit the boat show in February, and literati the book show in November.

Art shows at the Miami Art Museum, the Miami-Dade Cultural Center and other galleries. Architecture buffs may goggle at the Mediterranean Revival Vizcaya Mansion and relax in South Beach among the country's largest concentration of Art Deco buildings.
