Introduction
Nice, on the French Riviera, has been a popular coastal, tourist destination for centuries. The site of an impressive Roman amphitheatre, this ancient city has been inhabited for 400,000 years and today it still retains the mediaeval 'vieille ville' (old town), with narrow, windy streets, bordered by terraced red-tile roofed buildings which today house boutiques, restaurants and food shops.
Arts and Events
Nice has a strong sense of its own identity and tradition. It even has its own language called Nissart, which is spoken by both young and old, especially at festivals. The three main festivals are the carnival, a time of fun and jubilation; Cougourdons Feast, to announce the arrival of spring; and May Feast, to celebrate spring.
