Introduction
Advanced and multicultural, the vibrant city-state of Singapore fuses traditional Asian and European cultures with the advantages of modernity and progress. Dazzling skyscrapers and restful parks coexist with the click of mah-jongg tablets and the Muslim call to prayer. Safe and well organised, the city represents a great opportunity to enjoy a range of different Asian cultures.
Modern history cast Singapore as an emporium and nowadays its shops offer the finest goods from all around the world. Chinese, Malaysian, French and American cuisines are served in smart restaurants and busy eating centers, winning the island a world-class reputation for excellence in dining.
Arts and Events
Chinese New Year (January/February) is Singapore's biggest event, culminating in the Chingay procession showcasing traditional characters, dancing and music-making from the Chinese, Malay and Indian communities. Other annual events include a Thai Buddhist Songkran, Hindu Navathiri and European-style Christmas.
Theaters offer exciting spectacles all year round. The distinctively shaped Esplanade complex, home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, has a large theater and a concert hall. Exhilarating wayangs (Chinese operas) are performed in many venues; programs across the city offer international European-style dramas.
A busy street life, lit up by the fusing of so many different cultures, offers the strolling visitor an intense everyday performance.
