Villages in Bali all have at least one Hindu temple, so it’s a fairly common event to view a one of these remarkable temples on the island. However, Tanah Lot is probably the most famous and a sight not to be missed—especially at sunset. This extraordinary structure is built into the rock along the coastline of Tabanan and is attributed to a 15th century priest who believed the spot was ideal for worshiping the Balinese sea gods. Tanah Lot is one of seven temples built into the sea, each within sight of the next, forming a chain along the southwestern coast of the island. The holiest temple in Bali is Besakih Temple; this “Mother Temple,” located on the slope of Mount Agung, is a thousand years old and is available to Hindus of any caste. It contains three central temples and 18 surrounding sanctuaries, creating a massive structure that enthralls from end to end.
