Thaipusam - February 2010 - Event - Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple
Thaipusam is a Hindu thanksgiving celebration, in honour of Lord Subrahmanya who represents virtue, youth and power and is known as the destroyer of evil. Singaporean Hindus demonstrate their unwavering faith in the spectacular Thaipusam street procession from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, travelling four kilometres and finishing at the Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple on Keong Siak Road. During the procession, these highly dedicated participants - who undergo a strict regime before they proceed to carry the kavadi - are joined by supporters who drum and chant to keep up their morale.

Singapore DanceSport Championships - March 2010 - Event - Hougang Community Club
Singapore's National DanceSport Championships, held at the Hougang Community Club, incorporate both ballroom and Latin dance. More than 140 couples compete in the tournament, ranging from Grades E to A and representing around 25 countries.Underneath the glamour and artistry, this is a competition and the battle is fierce, with cash prizes on offer.

Singapore International Film Festival - April 2010 - Event - Various

The scale and scope of the Singapore International Film Festival has grown year after year and it is now proudly accredited as a major festival.  Successfully bringing Asian cinema into the spotlight with screenings of independent films and documentaries, and the coveted Silver Screen Awards, while 'Singapore Panorama' focuses on home-grown productions and the World Cinema division showcases works by non-Asian filmmakers.

Singapore Arts Festival - 15 May until 14 June - Event - Various

The hottest ticket for performing arts in the Far East, the Singapore Arts Festival attracts an abundance of well known Asian and western dance, theatre and music celebrities. More traditional artists prevail, but the experimental, innovative types are gaining more exposure each year.
The core programme alone features around 75 performances from many countries. Some are world premières, while others are commissioned works or works produced through international collaborations.

Worldwide Festival - May 2010 - Event - Various
Venues across the island, including Singapore Art Museum and Siloso Beach, host an array of audio-visual art exhibitions, networking parties and raves. The festival kicks off with the Exclusive Opening bash at the Singapore Art Museum, a star-studded party where you can meet and greet Gilles Peterson and some of the other DJs on the line-up. The week closes with the Beach Weekender, a festive two-day party on the palm-tree lined Siloso Beach of Sentosa Island.

Shakespeare in the Park - May 2010 - Event - Fort Canning Park

Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra Annual Concert - June 2010 - Event - SCO Concert Hall
Hear the rising stars of Singapore's Youth Chinese Orchestra perform at the SCO Concert Hall, accompanied by their more experienced counterparts of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. The programme usually includes around six pieces of different tempos and styles. In 2009, conductors Tsung Yeh and Quek Ling Kiong lead the orchestras through performances of Yellow River Waters by Zhang Lie and Singapura Overture by Zhang Xiao Feng.

Singapore Marathon - 6 December - Event - Various

Attracting some of the world's most seasoned athletes the Singapore Marathon starts at the Esplanade Bridge, crossing the Singapore River and snaking round the city, through the Marina and the central business district, before meeting a raucous crowd at the Padang and the finish line on St Andrew's Road. Spectators come along to soak up the carnival atmosphere and fun runners join in the half-marathon, 10K run and Kids' Dash for under 13s.
