Procession of the Three Kings – 5 January – Event – Various Venues
The Procession of the Three Kings (Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos) is a popular Christmas tradition throughout Spain. Thirty carriages equipped with an estimated 7000 kilograms of sweets traditionally wind their way through Madrid's streets from Retiro Park to the Plaza Mayor via Sol.
Celebrations in the capital include theatrical re-enactments, engaging pageants and entertaining puppet shows. During the procession the Kings and their various helpers shower sweets on the huge crowds who gather on the streets of Madrid to view the parade.

Madrid International Contemporary Art Fair - 17 until 21 February – Event - Parque Ferial Juan Carlos 1

Featuring modern and contemporary art the popular Madrid International Contemporary Art Fair (or ARCO), attracts artists, critics and art-enthusiasts from all over the world.
Galleries and solo artists take part in the Madrid International Contemporary Art Fair. Together, they highlight the latest emerging trends in contemporary art, ranging from painting, sculpture, installation and photography to video, graphics and new media.

Madrid Marathon - April - Event - Various Venues

Over 120,000 runners have crossed the finishing line of the notoriously challenging Madrid Marathon since it began in 1978. The demanding course includes Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Palacio Real - all good viewing points from where to watch the day‘s event. One million spectators line the city's main streets to provide support, as well as, bottled water, orange slices and sponges to the runners.

ATP Masters Series - 8 until 17 May - Event - Caja Mágica
Aside from the Grand Slams, the ATP Masters Series is the highest-ranking tennis competition in the world. Its tournaments attract the cream of the sport's elite as they vie for the coveted title of world number one. The series includes four tournaments in North America and five in Europe, culminating in the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup, which rotates through major world capitals and showcases the year's top eight players.

Fiesta de San Isidro - 13 until 17 May - Event - Various Venues
Madrid's largest festival, the Fiesta de San Isidro offers the chance to don traditional castizo finery and feast on delicacies such as thick steamy broth. Soak up flamenco, zarzuelas and Latin rhythms at concerts all over the city. The festival is launched with a grand procession of giants and cabezudos, followed by an opening speech in the Plaza Mayor, while the Plaza de Toros de las Ventas schedules all the best bullfights for the Fiestas de San Isidro.

Madrid Book Fair - 29 May until 14 June - Event - Parque del Buen Retiro
The Madrid Book Fair is held in the enchanting Parque del Retiro. Alongside the thousands of rare books on sale, there are round table debates and literary conferences, book signings, presentations and special guest appearances.

Fescinal - June until August - Event - Parque de La Bombilla

PHotoEspaña - 3 June until 26 July - Event - Various Venues
An international festival of photography and visual arts featuring exhibitions, debates and masterclasses, PHotoEspaña attracts budding photographers from far and wide, who enter the competition with the hope of their photographic talents being spotted. The top entries are exhibited at PHotoEspaña 2009 and the best candidate overall wins the Descubrimientos PHE Epson Award and a solo exhibition slot at PHotoEspaña 2010.
Aside from the competitive aspect of the festival, there is also a section devoted to great masters of photography and another called “Invited Projects”, with spaces dedicated to awards and special collections.

Madrid International Fashion Week - 12 until 14 July - Event - Parque Ferial Juan Carlos 1
Twice a year, the IFEMA Centre hosts Madrid's International Fashion Week, traditionally the most prestigious female fashion exhibition Spain has to offer. Models take to the catwalk, showcasing collections by up-and-coming and some more well-known designers. From vanguard designers and party clothes to city and rural wear, the Madrid International Fashion Week represents all areas of the industry.

Opera at the Teatro Real - 28 September untl 27 July - Event - Teatro Real
During its annual opera season, Madrid's Teatro Real stages productions with Madrid's Symphony Orchestra and Choir, visiting soloists and conductors and co-productions with opera companies from around Europe.
The 2008-2009 season production includes: Verdi's A Masked Ball, Musorgski's The Marriage, Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart and more.

Madrid Jazz Festival - October to November - Event - Various Venues

Every November, top acts from around the globe assemble in Madrid to perform at the Madrid Jazz Festival. Concerts take place across a range of city venues, including the Teatro Fernán Gómez and Teatro Real.
In 2008, the event celebrates its 25th year with an impressive line-up. Jazz legends making their way across the Atlantic to perform at the Madrid Jazz Festival include vocalist Kurt Elling, gospel group TAKE 6, the Barry Harris Trio, Dianne Reeve and Cuban singer Omara Portuondo. Home-grown artists include Galicia-born double-bass player Baldo Martínez and the Madrid-based Larry Martin Band.

Autumn Festival - 13 October until 16 November - Event - Various Venues
Every year the province of Madrid hosts the Festival de Otoño (Autumn Festival). The eclectic program observes a wide range of music, theatre, dance, workshops, and circus events laid on throughout the capital and its environs. Theatre highlights in 2008 included Sweeney Todd by the Teatro Español and The Monkey Trial by Belgian theatre company tg STAN. The impressive music line-up featured British pop-folk artist Josh Weller, indie rock band Sweet Billy Pilgrim and local madrileño group Hola a todo el mundo. For dance fans, there is an eclectic programme featuring Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo and Brazilian street dance troupe H2.

Christmas at Warner Park – December – Event – Parque Warner

The Warner Park in Madrid opens its doors in December for festive family fun. On top of all the usual rides, there are bonus attractions such as a Christmas parade, fireworks, fake snow, traditional music and, of course, Santa Claus. The Warner Bros theme park boasts Superman and Batman-themed rides, a log flume, ghost trains, children's rides and special shows.
