Attracting a quarter of a million people, the Istanbul International Theatre Festival sets the stage for the best in classical and experimental theatre and dance. This year there are over 60 performances, showcasing a wide variety of popular and controversial themes, including human rights, musical theatre and classics. Formula One: Turkish Grand Prix – 5 until 7 June - Sport - Istanbul Park
Since its inauguration in 1950, Formula One has attracted the very best talents in the world of motor racing, hungry for the fabulous riches and unrivalled prestige it offers. The king of motor sports travels to Turkey for one of the 17 races of the season. Istanbul Design Week – 16 until 21 June - Exhibition - Galata Bridge
Attracting visitors from all over the world, Istanbul Design Week at the old Galata Bridge provides a space to unleash creativity, compare ideas and pick up on new trends through a range of exhibits, shows and events. Workshops, lectures, talks, awards and competitions run alongside the main event. International Istanbul Jazz Festival – 2 until 15 July – Music Festival - Various Venues

The International Istanbul Jazz Festival presents a remarkable variety of music, ranging from traditional and contemporary jazz to rock, electronica and world music. However, it is jazz in particular that is performed by big names at venues all over the city. Among the many luminaries to have graced the stage in the past are musicians such as Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Randy Crawford and Dizzy Gillespie.

Eurasian – 19 July – Sport - Various Venues
Istanbul's annual Asia-to-Europe swimming, rowing and sailing competition attracts thousands of Turkish and international athletes aged from 14 to 71.
The swimming competition begins in the ferry port of Kanlica on the Black Sea, the Asian side of Istanbul, and ends in Kuruçeþme Cemil Park on the European side - a total distance of 6,5km. The rowing takes place on a 1600 meter course stretching from the Arnavutköy ferry port to Kuruçeþme Cemil Park bleachers while the sailing regattas depart from the Kandilli ferry port and end in Kuruçeþme Cemil Park.

Istanbul Cup – 27 July until 2 August - Sport - Sadi Gülçelik Sports Center
One of the 53 tournaments of the Sony Erricsson WTA Tour, the Istanbul Cup is played on hard courts and serves as a warm-up event for the US Open. The prize purse of USD220 000 attracts players from all over the world, including the world’s top 20. Sport enthusiasts and tennis-lovers travel from all over the globe to watch their favourites duel at the Sadi Gülçelik Sports Center.

A ballet spectacular takes place at the Cemal Resit Rey Concert Hall during the Istanbul International Ballet Competition while international competitors perform in two categories for the generous top prize of €6000 and the Outstanding Young Dancer award.

International Istanbul Biennial – 12 September until 8 November - Art - Various Venues
A source of artistic inspiration since 1987, the International Istanbul Biennial welcomes artists, critics and curators from all over the world to exchange ideas and evaluate contemporary artwork. Exhibits, meetings and seminars are held at several venues across the city.
The theme of the Biennial in 2009 is inspired by “What Keeps Mankind Alive”, a song Bertolt Brecht wrote 80 years ago. According to the organisers, Brecht's work offers the foundations for an examination of artistic production in today's capitalist climate.

Art City Istanbul – October - Art - Antrepo

Initiated in 2002 to give Turkish artists a chance to promote themselves at international level, the Art City Istanbul festival has grown steadily over the years, presenting a wide variety of works from over 100 national and international galleries, while attracting artists, collectors and art institutions from across the world.

Istanbul Book Fair – 31 October until 8 November - Cultural - Tüyap Fair Convention Center
The Istanbul Book Fair at Tüyap Fair Convention and Congress Center unites 550 publishing houses, offering a variety of books for purchase or perusal. This year the poet, play critic and translator Cevat Çapan has been chosen the “Author of Honour” of the 28th Istanbul Book Fair, therefore, the fair will host a series of events based on the poems, translations and life of Cevat Çapan.

Contemporary Istanbul – 3 until 6 December - Art - Lutfi Kirdar Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Center
Paintings, sculptures and ceramic products fill the display space at the Lutfi Kirdar Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Center for four days, while Contemporary Istanbul hosts national and international galleries, collectors, museum directors, art critics and members of press.
A wide variety of events and art projects purposefully coincide with the exhibition providing visitors a plethora of proceedings to pick from.
