Hotel Introduction
As its name implies, the first incarnation of the Hotel Luna Convento was as a 13th century convent. Its storied past and the scores of luminaries who have chosen to stay at the hotel over the centuries makes for an electric atmosphere.
The style and décor of the Luna Convento deliberately recalls its origins: whitewashed walls, relics, vaulted ceilings, long halls, and minimalist decor bring history into the present day and give the hotel a unique flavour all its own. In addition to exploring this ancient structure, guests of the hotel have access to a courtyard full of lemon and orange trees, two restaurants, meeting rooms, and a seawater-filled swimming pool.
The rooms and suites all enjoy sweeping views of the sea, and each is decorated in its own style. The clean lines and Mediterranean colours give a fresh feeling to the accommodations, while the thoughtful details provide a comfortable retreat in which to enjoy an Amalfi Coast holiday.
Dining
The two restaurants located at the Luna Convento each offer panoramic views of the seascape, as well as regional cuisine featuring the freshest ingredients. The ancient Saracen tower on the property, once used as a pirate lookout, houses one of the restaurants, which includes an American bar and lovely terrace.
Hotel Features
The Medieval convent that is now the Luna Convento was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1222 and was once the residence of Franciscan monks. Not surprisingly, the grounds include the original chapel, the doors to which are opened by a large rusty key for weekly mass and marriage ceremonies. Chapel visitors will also see the original wooden choir stalls still standing behind the altar.
The Hotel Luna Convento has housed celebrities from around the world. Just a few of the famous names who’ve stayed here: Wagner, Ibsen, Humphrey Bogart, Roberto Rossellini, and Ingrid Bergman.
Meetings and Events
The centuries-old medieval chapel is an ideal spot for a romantic wedding, and the meeting rooms at the hotel can easily accommodate a small reception or business meeting. Technology at the hotel includes high-speed Internet and wireless Internet service.
Location
The hotel is locate on the east entrance of Amalfi, perched directly above the sea, overlooking the entire bay and within walking distance from the centre of town. It is a longer journey from the closest airport, Naples Capodichino (75km), following the A3 motorway until the Vietri Sul Mare exit, while good connections also run from Salerno railway station (15km).
