Delft is a smaller, even prettier version of Amsterdam with plenty to see and worthy of a day trip, while Haarlem is a real match for quality and breadth of interest to Amsterdam, and could easily be the better option as a base for discovery.
Maastricht is altogether more elegant, and differs from the rest of the country in that it sits snugly in a backdrop of mountains, eschewing clogs and windmills for a more pan-European vibe. Cafe culture here feels almost Parisian and the cuisine reflects the city's eagerness to share with its Belgian and German neighbours.
